OCT-A: Getting Started, Coding & Getting Reimbursed

OPTOMETRY

  • John Warren, OD

In this engaging video interview, Dr. John Warren shares practical insights on successfully integrating OCT Angiography (OCT-A) into his optometric practice. Speaking with OD Wire’s Gretchyn Bailey, Dr. Warren explains how the new CPT code for OCT-A allows for higher reimbursement and better recognition of the procedure’s complexity—making the technology both clinically valuable and financially sustainable. He offers real-world examples from his own clinic, where OCT-A has become a game-changer in diagnosing and managing conditions like diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and vascular occlusions.

Key Topics Covered:

  • New OCT-A CPT Code: Significant increase in reimbursement vs. standard OCT ($57 vs. $32).
  • Efficient Workflow: How to seamlessly integrate OCT-A into same-day patient exams without disrupting flow.
  • Clinical Value: OCT-A provides critical vascular insights that can improve diagnosis and patient care in real time.
  • Documentation Tips: What’s required to bill properly and ensure compliance with new code expectations.
  • Advice for ODs: Dr. Warren compares OCT-A’s impact to topography and traditional OCT—tools he now considers indispensable.
  • Future Potential: How OCT-A is likely to shape glaucoma care and broader posterior segment diagnostics.

Whether you're considering adding OCT-A or want to understand how to maximize its value, this conversation offers both honest advice and actionable strategies.
